CHD Expert Shares a Few Quick Facts on Education Foodservice in the US

There are approximately 109,800 K-12 schools, 5,000 universities, and over 13,000 school districts in the United States, according to CHD Expert’s foodservice database.

Now that it’s August, many faculty members in education foodservice are gearing up for the start of operations in the fall. They’re planning menus, developing new foodservice programs, and sourcing products. They have plenty of inspiration to draw from, as two of the largest conferences in the education foodservice industry took place in July: the School Nutrition Association (SNA) and the National Association of College & University Food Service (NACUFS).

So, what’s new in education foodservice for 2015? At CHD Expert we have comprehensive data on a variety of foodservice segments, including the education industry. We evaluated the most recent data in our foodservice database and pulled out some interesting facts on education foodservice that we’d like to share with you.

Here are a few facts about school foodservice we pulled from our Easy2FIND database:

Ownership trends in Colleges & Universities are pretty evenly matched. Considering ownership, 48% of colleges & universities are public or government operated, while 40% are private, and 12% are categorized as religious.

Primary schools tend to serve the most meals per day. 40% of Primary schools serve 251 to 500 meals per day while 26% of primary schools serve 101 to 250 per day. Primary schools are the most prevalent school type in the United States, accounting for approximately 83% of total K-12 enrollment.

Federal-assisted meal programs are prevalent in primary schools, secondary schools, and within school districts. There are approximately 4,300 school districts, 2,700 secondary schools, and 5,400 primary schools in the United States that have more than 500 students on the Free and Reduced Lunch program.
