Organic and Locally-Sourced Foods Remain Popular in the US

organic optionsWe’ve mentioned consumers demands for healthy food before here on the CHD Expert blog. That trend does not seem to be slowing, and it has been giving rise to another foodservice trend over the past few years: Americans’ growing preference for organic and locally-sourced foods.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, the number of farmers markets is rising across the United States. The USDA theorizes that this growth could reflect consumers’ increasing demand for local products because they perceive those products to be fresher and of a higher quality. It also makes the customer feel good that they’re supporting the local economy as well as making better choices for the environment.

Once again foodservice operators are meeting consumer demands by updating menus to include more organic products and being more transparent about where their food comes from. As of January 2016, there were more than 5,000 restaurants in Easy2FIND with organic options on the menu.

At CHD Expert we have comprehensive data on a variety of menu types. We recently evaluated the most recent data in our foodservice database regarding organic options and pulled some interesting facts that we’d like to share with you.

Here are a few facts about organic options from our Easy2FIND database:

In the United States, 43 percent of restaurants in Easy2FIND with organic options are classified as Independents. (CHD Expert considers an establishment independent if it has fewer than 10 units in operation.)

The average check at 48 percent of restaurants with organic options is $5-$7. Additionally, the average check at 15 percent of restaurants with organic options is $15-$20, and at 14 percent of these restaurants the average check is $7-$10.
