Kostuch Media Ltd Introduces New Initiatives

Feb. 23, 2011 (Toronto, Ont.) – Change is afoot at one of Canada’s longest-serving trade publishers. Effective immediately, Kostuch Publications has become Kostuch Media Ltd. Executives of the company made the announcement at a cocktail reception, held at Victor Restaurant in Hotel Le Germain, Mercer St. on Feb 23.

In welcoming guests to the reception, owner Mitch Kostuch took the group through a journey of the past 40 years, highlighting several of the company’s many noteworthy achievements and announcing that Rosanna Caira, editor and publisher, who celebrated 30 years with the company last week, is now a minority shareholder in the company along with Kostuch’s children Jim and Lynn.

“The company is positioned strongly for the future,” said Kostuch, passing the microphone to Caira, who announced the new company name, and unveiled its new logo. Caira told the gathering of readers and advertisers of the company’s two publications – Foodservice and Hospitality and Hotelier – that the company was “celebrating a new era in foodservice publishing. As part of our new mandate, print will continue to be crucial to our company’s success moving forward but digital and events are also high on our schedule.”

In addition to producing two publications (Foodservice and Hospitality and Hotelier), and websites, the company recently introduced a new print product called The Big Black Book, a definitive resource guide, poly-bagged with the company’s January issue of both publications. The Big Black Book crosses over from print to the digital platform and can be updated as needed throughout the year.

The company has also unveiled a new product called the Produce and Protein Guide, a local foods poster listing the fruits, vegetables and proteins available, initially in the Ontario market, outlining their characteristics, their seasonality and how these products should be stored. The product will serve as a useful tool to help chefs and operators plan their foodservice purchases throughout the year. Debuting in April for the Ontario market, it will be joined by a new column called Go Local, which will be published in F&H and online at foodserviceworld.com six times a year, highlighting the best practices of chefs and operators nation-wide who are achieving success by highlighting local products. The poster will be sponsored by Ontario’s Greenbelt Fund through its Broader Public Sector Investment Fund: Promoting Ontario food.

As part of the new strategy, Caira also told the crowd that “we will also boast new divisions and new partnerships including with Chicago-based foodservice research leader Technomic Inc. and Lyon, France-based CHD Expert, the leading foodservice and hospitality database management company in 14 countries.” According to Caira, Kostuch Media Ltd. “will become the most comprehensive source of information on the foodservice and hospitality industry, a dynamic and evolving company that will boast three divisions – print, digital and events.”

“The name change is reflective of the changing world of publishing and speaks to our evolving mandate as a communications company,” said Caira. “As consumers we now look to a multitude of distribution channels to provide us with up-to-the-minute information, and we continue to be seduced by all things digital.”

On the digital front, in addition to relaunching both its websites (foodserviceworld.com and hoteliermagazine.com) and the weekly Newsblast, the company has introduced a new column called FoodPlus, an expanded version of the magazine’s monthly Food Column, produced on the company’s website five times a year. The digital version will allow readers to have more information on a specific food topics five times a year (breakfast, beef, chicken, Italian foods, fish and seafood) covering such areas as merchandising tips, promotional ideas, recipes and new product offerings. From an advertising point of view, this expanded feature will allow advertisers to take advantage of synergistic marketing, – advertising both in the print version and, for a nominal additional fee, in the digital version.

Next month, the company will also debut a new digital publication called the Canadian Restaurant Market Report, published with Fisher Hospitality Group and Ryerson University. The report will allow restaurant owners to measure how they compare against industry averages.

As part of the Kostuch Media strategic alliance with Technomic Inc., a global leader renowned for collecting data, the firms will co-produce Kostuch’s signature Top 100 report of foodservice chain corporations and an expanded Top 200 research report on foodservice chains by brand. “Together with our combined resources we will be able to produce an even stronger report with more insightful analysis of the various segments of the industry as well as key market trends.” The two companies will also work together to market a vast stable of other reports produced by Technomic Inc., including the Franchise Report, menu sector reports and much more. “The new relationship gives us the ability to dig deeper into operating stats, menu trend analysis and provide a better understanding of what today’s operators want.

Finally, as part of the new structure, Kostuch Media Ltd. has also launched a Signature Events Division, which will allow the company to focus on creating new conferences, including one focused on new trends, slated for September 2011, produced in conjunction with Technomic Inc.; a new speaker series and a host of other events.
