All across the United States consumers are looking for new ways to add more protein into their diets, whether it’s eating more traditional proteins such as red meat or opting for protein alternatives such as turkey or meatless options like soy. From television ads to grocery store shelves, protein packed products are making waves across the American foodservice landscape. Food companies are adding protein to a variety of products, including bars, cereals, and beverages.
But does this protein trend transfer over to the restaurant landscape of the US? At CHD Expert we have comprehensive data on a variety of menu types, including the Protein Menu Type. We evaluated the most recent data in our foodservice database and pulled out some interesting facts on the Protein Menu Type that we’d like to share with you.

There are over 58,000 restaurants with the Protein Menu Type in the United States. The top three protein restaurants with the highest number of units are Fried Chicken, Seafood & fish, and Barbecue. Each of these types of restaurants have over 14,000 units across the US.
The average check at 28% of restaurants with a Protein Menu Type is $5-$7. This is followed by an average check of $10-$15 at 20% of protein restaurants and an average check of $7-$10 at 19% of protein restaurants. Protein-focused restaurants are often an affordable option for the majority of Americans.
Restaurants with the Protein Menu Type have staying power. CHD Expert’s data shows that 66% of protein restaurants have been open 5+ years and 16% been in business for 2-5 years.
Independents dominate the protein restaurant landscape. The majority (62%) of restaurants with a Protein Menu Type are Independent while 38% are classified as chains. (CHD Expert defines an independent restaurant as one with less than 10 units.)
Protein is popular in Southern states. The states with the highest percentage of Protein restaurants in the total state restaurant landscape are: Alabama (18%), Mississippi (18%), Georgia (16%), Louisiana (15%), and South Carolina (14%).
