Uncorked: The Growing Popularity of Wine in the United States
You might think that the largest wine market in the world is France. Or is it Italy? Or maybe Spain? These are all fine guesses, but all are incorrect. As of 2010 the largest wine market in the world is actually the United States.
According to the Wine Institute, in 2014 Americans drank 2.80 gallons of wine per capita. This is up from just 1.74 gallons in 1993. The Wine Institute also reports that 893 million gallons of wine were consumed in the United States in 2014.
While the wine industry’s rate of growth has slowed, it does still continue to increase, according to Technomic. The firm’s 2015 WineTAB report shows that total wine volume grew 1 percent in 2014, and projections for 2015 are similar. The report also found that consumes are highly engaged with wine and are becoming more educated about it every day.
Consumers have plenty of options when it comes to drinking wine in the away-from-home foodservice market. In addition to restaurants and bars & taverns, consumers can also enjoy wine at establishments where the main focus is on the vino: wine bars.
According to our Easy2FIND foodservice database, there are over 1,400 wine bars in the United States. CHD Expert’s data shows that, of these, 41 percent have been open for 5+ years, and 23 percent have been in business for 2 to 5 years.
In terms of popularity by state (in number of units), Washington ranks first, with 27 percent of the state’s Bars/Adult Beverages Oriented Outlets landscape being made up of wine bars. New York follows behind at 24 percent and Texas rounds out the top three with 11 percent.
With the holiday season approaching, wine sales are expected to rise across the country. Last week the Chicago Tribune reported that liquor retailers in the city were expecting a record season of holiday wine sales, partly thanks to increasing wine consumption in the United States. At least one retailer reported that one-quarter of their annual sales is generated during the last six weeks of the year, and 13 percent of that is wine sales.
