As the foodservice landscape in the United States changes based on evolving consumer demands, operators in a variety of segments are updating their offerings to stay competitive and capture buyer attention. For operators of convenience stores and gas stations, this often means instituting more made-to-order or “fresh” options and remodeling the store’s physical space. CHD Expert, a global leader in aggregating, analyzing, and managing foodservice data, has evaluated the C-Store/Gas Station landscape to offer insights into the market.

In the CHD Expert foodservice database there are more than 169,600 convenience stores and gas stations (C-Stores/Gas Stations) in the United States. Within the “Retail stores” segment, C-Stores/Gas Stations make up 49%, followed by Grocery stores (35%), Liquor stores (10%), and Club stores/professional shops/cash & carry (5%).

When considering ownership, 53% of the C-Store/Gas Station landscape is made up of independent operators. (CHD Expert defines an Independent as an operator with fewer than 10 units in operation.) Chain operators with 501+ units account for 38% of the C-Store/Gas Station landscape while chains with 251-500 units make up 6% and operators with 101-250 units make up 2%. In terms of these chain operators, the top five sandwich chain restaurants in terms of number of units and market share in the U.S. are Exxon Mobil (13.61%), 7-Eleven (9.74%), Chevron (7.9%), Circle K (6.75%), and Citgo (6.69%).

When it comes to staffing these many C-Stores and gas stations, 45% have between 1-4 employees, 34% have between 5-9 employees, and 17% have between 10-19 employees.

Many chains within the C-Store/Gas Station market are household names throughout the country. Within the United States, the top five states with the highest percentage of C-Stores/Gas Stations as a percentage of the state’s total foodservice Retail store landscape are North Dakota (63.15%), South Dakota (62.88%), New Mexico (62.49%), Iowa (60.70%), and Nevada (60.14%).

Understanding the complexities of the C-Store/Gas Station operator landscape is critical for suppliers, distributors, and manufacturers, that want to expand their territory. There are different variables that need to be considered when selling to chains versus independents and suppliers that have access to comprehensive retail foodservice data are better able to make more informed strategy decisions that lead to greater profitability.
